Well, that's one way to break the ice. Especially after the tension of the last couple of weeks.

I don't believe I caused overmuch trouble, but if you find a discarded flare on the second level, I apologise, it was merely a distraction and I removed most of the gunpowder.

Ned? I believe I am in a better position to discuss the reasons behind my being here, so whenever you're available, I'd like to get started.

Damon? How are you?

[Ned accepted it. He was quiet for a moment before offering] You know, there are a lot of people here who've done much worse. I don't - I don't expect that to comfort you, or anything. I just. You're not a bad person, I don't think. And I just thought you should know that.

[Bob didn't think much of that, it didn't help him and it didn't help the other inmates. Besides, it wasn't really his concern, the crimes of others. Ned's opinion of him was probably more relevant.] That's fine.

[He frowned slightly - Bob seemed polite, but cagier than he'd expected. Trying to draw his inmate out, Ned asked,]

Why don't you tell me, what do you think you - we, we need to work on in order to help you resolve these... issues?

If I knew that, I wouldn't be here. There is very little I know I can do from here. I usually work on amends by meeting the people involved, taking care of it to their satisfaction. I can't exactly do that from here. [Then you shouldn't have died, should you?] It might seem simplistic but it worked, for the most part.

It would take a new approach.

[Ned nodded, softening somewhat. The man was, after all, dead and unable to face those he'd harmed, and that had to weigh heavily on him] I understand.

To be honest, I - I don't know exactly what that approach is. I'm new to this to, you see. But here's the thing, I'll respect you and be fair as long as you can do the same for me. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm going to try my best to make this work. And I sincerely hope you'll do the same.

[He holds his hand out, trying to exude goodwill]

[Bob shook his hand.] I plan to. Well, then. We'll start at the beginning. What first steps do you plan to take, or have we gotten that far?

Uh. Well. [Although he's trying to pretend otherwise, Ned's more or less making this up on the spot] Just - stay out of trouble, you know? Try to get along with people, just, just don't antagonize others, I guess I'd say. It's dangerous, on this ship. And, ah, check in with me, from time to time. Hopefully at least once a week, if not more often.

Certainly. Was there anything else? [he is expecting a 'yes' to that.]

Not really. Just - well. Are there any other questions you have for me?

[He sighs a little.] What about a job?

A job! Yes. Right. That. Well.

Is there any - did you have a particular employment in mind? I trust you enough to give you a bit of choice in the matter. There's the library, of course, and the kitchen - we're always understaffed, and could certainly use another pair of hands. Then there's... well, you'd need advanced medical training for the infirmary, which correct me if I'm wrong, I don't remember reading about in your file. Other than that, I think it's just custodial.

I suppose I spend enough time in the library. I'm not quite the cook, barring campside food.

Right. Perfect. The library, then. I'll, ah - notify the proper whoever.
