The Admiral's duplication of my cabin included them and well, something about bears. Nothing to worry about.

I see. And now I'm curious what it included about bears.

I'm not sure about the man's reaction to being made a child, but we were trying to get to the second level cookies without being seen and I had told him about encountering a bear.

Well, being all of eight, this excited Damon's imagination and I used the flare to distract the adults who he'd thought were bears.

Flares are rather dangerous to use inside, so I removed most of the gunpowder.

I'm not even sure I knew what a flare was when I was twelve.

We used them as Christmas decorations when we ran out of candles.

[Exactly twenty minutes later, Bob was standing waiting for Ned to appear. His expression was patient and congenial.]

[Ned looks a bit tense, maybe a tiny bit frazzled around the edges, but he smiles when he sees the other man]

Hi, sorry, bit of a busy day in the kitchens. You're, er - are you Bob?

[He holds out his hand for a shake.] Bob Fraser. Pleased to meet you, Ned.

[There is a split second in which Ned looks down at Bob's hand before taking it - just a moment of hesitation; the whole not-liking-to-be-touched thing isn't easy to shake, but he tries his best to control it. Ned looks a tiny bit perplexed]

Pleasure's mine. You're - well. They told me you were friendly. Which is good, I mean, I'm friendly, you're friendly, we're a big friendly group of friends. Um.

Anyway, yes. Good to meet you.

Relax, Ned. Take a seat? [he indicated a couple of nearby chairs.]

[He smiles sheepishly and scratches the back of his neck]

And here I'm supposed to be the one with a handle on things.

[He sits] So, er. I know you're not exactly new to the Barge, but - how've you been settling in? It can be... strange, at first. Making friends. But from what I've heard, you've got quite a few people who think pretty well of you, so... so there's that, anyway.
